Cultivate is about intentionally tending to the things you want to grow in your life. Maybe you’re cultivating a peaceful home, stronger finances, a marriage, a garden, a business, your career, a hobby, your creativity, a friendship, or a dream you’ve been working toward.
Not everything you cultivate will produce an immediate result. Some things need consistent attention over months or even years before you see what they become. The question here is simply: What am I growing in this season of my life?
Cultivate is one of our seven daily practices at LJ Lifestyle. While Personal Growth focuses on your learning, development, and who you’re becoming, Cultivate asks you to look at what you’re nurturing in your life and the care you’re giving it.
Recognize What You Want to Grow
Think about something you want to see flourish. It could be a dream you’re ready to pursue or something you already have and want to strengthen. A marriage still needs nurturing after the wedding. A friendship needs attention even when you’ve known each other for years. The things we value can become so familiar that we forget they still need care.
Ask yourself what matters to you in this season. Maybe you want to build a business, establish family traditions, grow a garden, or give an old hobby a place in your life again. Choose something you’re willing to invest in, knowing that investment may involve time, energy, money, patience, or asking for help.
You can care about several things while choosing where to give more attention right now. Consider what needs tending and what you realistically have the capacity to nurture.
Understand What It Needs From You
Wanting something to grow is the starting point. The next question is: What does this need from me? Be specific, because “work on my marriage” or “grow my business” doesn’t tell you what to do when you have an hour available.
For example:
- A marriage may need uninterrupted time together, affection, shared enjoyment, or a conversation you’ve been avoiding.
- A business may need you to finish an offer, follow up with a customer, or consistently share your work.
- A garden may need watering, better soil, pruning, or protection as the weather changes.
- A friendship may need an invitation and time spent together beyond occasionally liking each other’s posts.
- A peaceful home may need clearer expectations, shared responsibilities, or a gentler way of speaking to one another.
- Creativity may need room to experiment and make things without the pressure to sell or share them.
Notice how each one calls for a different response. Giving something useful attention starts with understanding what would actually support it.
Give It Care You Can Sustain
Once you know what’s needed, give that care a place in your life. Schedule the conversation, send the invitation, set aside time to create, or decide when you’ll work on the business. Make the next step clear enough that you can follow through.
This may also require a boundary. An evening spent working toward your dream might mean declining another commitment. Time with your spouse might require sharing household tasks so you both have the energy to be present. Consider what needs to shift so the things you value have room to develop.
As a daily practice, Cultivate gives you a reason to pause and notice where your attention is going. Some days you’ll take a meaningful step forward. Other days, you’ll simply maintain something you’ve already built. Both are part of caring for a life.
Allow Time for Things to Develop
A newly planted garden won’t feed you tomorrow, and one good conversation won’t resolve every issue in a relationship. Some of the care you give today creates conditions for growth you’ll recognize much later. That can be difficult when you’re putting in effort and wondering whether it’s making a difference.
Pay attention to the smaller signs. Are you and your spouse talking more openly? Are customers returning? Have you started making time for the hobby you used to only think about? Those changes can help you recognize what’s developing before you reach a larger outcome.
Patience also involves noticing when something needs a different approach. If your efforts aren’t helping, reassess what’s needed, seek support, or reconsider the timing. You can remain committed while changing how you care for something.
And leave room to enjoy it along the way. You can cultivate a garden because you love flowers, nurture a friendship because you enjoy each other, or create simply because it makes your life richer. That enjoyment is worth making room for.
What Will You Tend to Today?
Take a moment to name what you’re cultivating in this season. Then ask: “What is one thing I can do today to give it the care it needs?” It might be a small action, but it gives your intention somewhere to go.
