3 Small Shifts for a Calmer Fall

Fall is a natural season of transition — for me, my kids are back in school and the days are getting shorter. With my oldest starting kindergarten full-time, I wanted to make sure our transition was peaceful and calm. Unlike the expected back-to-school rush and chaos, I’ve been intentional about slowing down. I want to share with you what I’ve been doing — and what you can try too — to create more peace and intention in your everyday life. Here are three small but powerful shifts to help you enjoy a calmer fall.

1. Create a Morning Anchor

A busy season often means hectic mornings. That’s why having a morning anchor is so important. Think of it as one simple ritual that grounds you before the day takes off.

This doesn’t have to be a long or complicated routine. It could be:

  • Starting your day with prayer or a devotional (my favorite devotional app is Glorify)
  • Sipping a warm cup of tea or coffee without distractions
  • A short journaling session to clear your mind
  • A few minutes of stretching or deep breathing

By starting with an intentional anchor, you create a sense of steadiness that carries into the rest of your day.

2. Batch the Busy Work

Little tasks have a sneaky way of draining energy when they’re scattered throughout the week. Instead, try batching your busy work — grouping similar tasks together in one window of time.

Some examples of what I do:

  • Lay out our outfits for the week (yes, even mine — down to the socks and undies!) on Sunday evening so mornings feel smoother. I even have a Trello board I use for this. Just let me know if you want a free copy — I’d be happy to share.
  • Meal plan every week. This only takes a few minutes but brings so much structure to our days. If cooking isn’t your jam or you just want to save time, try prepping what you can ahead of time so you’re not scrambling every night.
  • Set aside weekly rest time. Block it off in your calendar and treat it like any other commitment. I use my Back-to-School Trello board for the kids and my Daily Flow Trello board for myself. Both help me track goals, habits, tasks, calendar items, and to-do lists all in one neat place. Setting aside time on the weekends helps ensure a smoother, less stressful week.

When you batch, you protect your focus and leave more space for creativity and calm.

3. Set a Seasonal Intention

Instead of chasing a long list of goals, try choosing one guiding intention for the season. Think of the person you want to become and then set a goal for the season that supports that vision. This intention becomes your filter for decision-making and your reminder of what matters most right now.

Ask yourself: What is one goal I can set for myself to bring me closer to the kind of person I want to be?

Your goal might be something like:

  • Tracking expenses for better financial accountability
  • Working out three days a week to create a new identity as someone who takes care of their physical health
  • Visiting loved ones weekly to add more joy to your life

Keep it simple, trackable, and doable without struggle. These intentional goals help you build routines and habits that will support you not just for the season, but long-term.

When you focus on one intentional goal, you simplify your path and give yourself room to actually follow through.

Your Turn
