I almost didn’t write this today. Between family time, wash day for the girls (if you know, then you know) , and everything pulling at my attention, it would’ve been easy to push this off. But this message has been on my heart, and I know someone needs to hear it.
Lately, I’ve been talking a lot about Future Self goals. Future Self goal planning is about focusing on who you want to become, not just what you want to accomplish.
For example, “I want to lose 10 pounds” is a goal.
“I want to be someone who prioritizes health so I can feel stronger, more energized, and more present for my family” is an identity shift.
Here’s the thing.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, emotionally drained, or stuck right now, thinking about your future self can feel exhausting.
If that’s you, you’re not alone.
So if you feel like you’re on a hamster wheel and don’t know how to move forward, start here.
Topics Covered
Step 1: Acknowledge Where You Are Without Judgment
If you’re reading this, you’re already doing something for your personal growth. That matters.
Where you are right now is not your final destination. It’s a stop along the way, not the end of the road.
Step 2: Identify What’s Keeping You Stuck
Ask yourself:
What feels like it’s keeping me here?
Write it down.
Name it.
Some things you can control. Some things you can’t. Awareness alone can bring relief.
Step 3: Practice Gratitude for What You Can Control
This isn’t about minimizing your struggles. It’s about creating perspective.
Even small gratitude, your breath, your body, making it through the day, creates emotional breathing room.
Step 4: Shift Focus by Helping Someone Else (Within Your Limits)
Ask:
How can I be a genuine help to someone today without overextending myself?
A conversation.
A check-in.
A hug.
A kind word.
Helping others can gently pull us out of our own heaviness.
Step 5: Do One Small Thing That Brings You Joy
Ask yourself:
What is one small thing I can do today to make myself happy?
Not ten things. Just one.
Step 6: Gently Envision Your Future Self
Instead of planning everything, ask:
If I allowed myself one year of growth, what could my life look like this time next year?
Write it down. Let it guide you, not pressure you.
If You’re Feeling Especially Overwhelmed, Pause Here
Before moving on, take a moment to slow down. This part is meant to be gentle support for your nervous system, heart, and mind.
Scriptures to Reflect On
You can read one slowly or write it down and sit with it.
• “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28
• “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
• “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7
Journal Prompts for When You Feel Stuck
You don’t have to answer all of these. Choose one.
• What feels heavy for me right now, and what do I need most in this season?
• What is one truth I can hold onto when my thoughts feel overwhelming?
• What would it look like to be gentler with myself this week?
