How to Set Goals That Actually Stick (5 Steps to Your Future Self)

As the air grows crisp and the leaves turn golden, I always feel this pull to pause, reflect, and recalibrate. Fall has a way of signaling change, both in the world around us and within ourselves. For me, this season has become synonymous with intentional goal-setting—not just writing down what I want, but truly mapping the habits and mindset needed to become the person I want to be.

If you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or like you’re drifting through life without a clear plan, this post is for you. I want to show you how to set meaningful goals for the fall season that align with your life, habits, and future self.

My Journey With Goal Setting

When I first started creating goals, I did what I thought was “enough.” I made vision boards, wrote things down in a notebook, and placed them somewhere I could see every day. That was it. The plan was basically: write the goal, then somehow magically reach it.

Next, I discovered the SMART method—specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound. I tried it, and yes, it was a step up. I even explored other acronyms, wrote out my “deep whys,” and made sure every goal was realistic and obtainable.

But something still didn’t click. Goals and action just weren’t connecting the way I wanted. I wasn’t failing per se, but there was a disconnect—a missing link between my written goals and the habits I needed to reach them.

So I started digging deeper. I mapped out my daily, weekly, and monthly habits tied to each goal. I was organized. I was committed. But something crucial was still missing: I hadn’t identified my future self.

The Shift: Goals as a Future Self, Not Things

Here’s the turning point: instead of setting a goal like, “I want a new car,” I reframed it as:

“I want to be financially responsible and secure so that I can obtain what I want, including a new car.”

The focus shifted from what I wanted to obtain to who I wanted to become. And let me tell you—this made all the difference.

Every time I wanted to skip a habit or felt unmotivated (because motivation isn’t always there), I remembered the person I was becoming. My future self wasn’t just capable of achieving the goal; she was disciplined, intentional, and aligned.

The habits created the discipline, and the mindset of my future self made the discipline stick. That was the missing piece I had been searching for.

Taking It Further: The 12-Week Year

Once I discovered this, I started implementing the 12-week year method. It’s a framework where instead of planning for 12 months, you plan for 12 weeks at a time. It was amazing. I accomplished more in a few months than I had in years. It felt like a power push that accelerated progress, kept me accountable, and helped me refine habits quickly.

But then I realized there was an even more natural rhythm I could align with: the seasons.

Why Seasons Matter in Goal-Setting

If you pay attention, you feel the subtle shifts as summer turns to fall. It’s in the air, in your energy, even in the way stores change displays and social media starts pushing cozy content. Our bodies and minds naturally respond to seasonal changes.

So I thought: why not align goal-setting with the seasons?

Now, instead of setting goals for arbitrary months, I work in 8–12 week cycles per season. Each cycle has:

  • A focus on the habits that support my future self
  • Seasonal goals that feel timely and relevant
  • Systems and accountability to keep me moving forward

This approach creates a rhythm that matches how our lives naturally flow, rather than fighting against it.

How to Map Your Fall Goals: A Step-by-Step Guide

Let’s break this down into actionable steps you can start today.

1. Reflect on Your Current Season

Before you set new goals, pause and assess where you are right now. Ask yourself:

  • Which habits or routines are currently serving me?
  • What areas of my life feel out of balance?
  • What do I want my life to feel like at the end of this season?

Write down your answers. Seeing them on paper creates clarity and gives you a baseline for your goals.

2. Identify Your Priorities

Not every goal needs to be massive. Seasonal goal-setting is about focus, not overwhelm. Pick 3–5 meaningful goals that will move you closer to your future self.

For example:

  • Wellness: Develop a consistent morning routine, journal daily, or prioritize self-care.
  • Lifestyle: Declutter your space, create cozy seasonal rituals, or explore a hobby.
  • Career/Finance: Save a specific amount, plan a new project, or learn a skill that advances your career.

The key is that each goal should feel aligned with the person you want to become, not just something you want to obtain.

3. Break Goals Into Habits

This is where many people stumble—they have goals but no daily system to support them. Instead, ask:

  • What small daily or weekly actions will lead me toward this goal?
  • Can I create a simple, repeatable habit that reinforces my goal without feeling overwhelming?

Examples:

  • Instead of “eat healthier,” commit to a 10-minute journaling session about your meals and energy.
  • Instead of “save money,” automatically transfer a small amount each week.

Remember: consistency beats intensity. Small steps done regularly create lasting change.

4. Connect With Your Future Self

Every day, when motivation wanes, visualize the person you’re becoming. Ask yourself:

  • Who is my future self in this area of life?
  • What habits does she naturally have?
  • How does she think, feel, and act?

This mindset shift transforms tasks from burdens into steps that build the version of yourself you aspire to be.

5. Align With the Seasonal Rhythm

Finally, consider the natural energy of fall:

  • Cooler weather and cozy routines invite reflection and nesting.
  • Shorter days encourage focus and discipline.
  • Nature itself is letting go of what’s unnecessary—use that as inspiration to release habits, beliefs, or goals that no longer serve you.

By setting goals with the season, you’re working with your natural rhythm, not against it.
